Annecy rain radar: latest images and 2-hour rain forecast
The radar shows rain that has just fallen; the forecast tells you what is expected. This page keeps the two apart: first the observed radar map, then the rain expected in Annecy over the next two hours.
In short. The map shows the latest rain radar images (about 2 hours), in other words rain that has already been observed, with no forecast and no animation of the future. Rain for the next two hours is given separately, from Météo-France’s AROME model and the ICON-D2 model of the DWD (the German weather service), quarter of an hour by quarter of an hour. Each source shows its own time.

Understanding the conditions
Observed radar and forecast: two different things
Radar measures the drops suspended in the atmosphere at the moment of the sweep. A radar animation replays the past; it does not predict future movement. Forecast rain comes from weather models: it may not happen, or may happen somewhere else.
The limits of radar in the mountains
Terrain can mask or distort the echoes, especially in deep, narrow valleys. Radar cannot always tell rain from snow: above the rain-snow line, an echo may be snow. For the rain-snow line, see the mountain weather page.
Before setting out, compare the radar with the forecast for the next two hours. For indoor ideas, see the Annecy rainy-day guide; to see the sky over the lake, check the Lake Annecy webcam.
It shows the latest images available, a few minutes behind real time: this is rain that has already been observed. The map shows no forecast.
Does the radar animation predict the rain to come?
No. The animation replays the images from the last two hours. The expected rain is in the separate forecast section of the page, with its time.
What is the difference between a rain radar and a forecast?
Radar is an observation; a forecast is the output of a weather model. The two can differ.
What do the colours on the radar map mean?
They are radar reflectivities in dBZ: the warmer the colour, the heavier the rain. The legend is below the map.
Sources and method
Text of this page last revised on . This date says nothing about how recent the images or data are: the webcams are supplied by the credited operators and their timestamp shows when the image was taken; model forecasts and official reports are separate pieces of information, each with its own time.

Observed rain radar: latest images
Radar images from the recent past (roughly the last 2 hours), with no forecast. The animation replays the past: it does not show what is coming. Radar cannot always tell rain from snow: at altitude, an echo may be snow.
