Weather-model estimates at the stated altitude of each point, not measurements. Forecast snowfall is not the depth of snow on the ground. Source: Open-Meteo, updated every hour.
Look at the Col du Galibier and its weather at the altitude of the pass, then check the road status at the official source: a webcam does not tell you whether the pass is open.
In short. The Col du Galibier is at an altitude of 2,645 m (D902 (Savoie), continuing as the D1091 at the Col du Lautaret (Hautes-Alpes)). The status shown at the top of the page (open, closed or partly open) is the one published by the Département de la Savoie on Savoie Route, with its update time; a webcam does not confirm that a pass is open. The page also gives the weather calculated at the pass’s altitude, views of the pass, the announced schedule and the official links.
Understanding the conditions
Is the Col du Galibier open?
For the 2026 season, the Département de la Savoie (the local authority) announced the opening of the Galibier tunnel on 29 May and of the pass on 5 June (press release of 23 April 2026, updated on 12 May 2026). This is a provisional schedule, subject to the weather and to roadworks. The current status at the top of the page is the one published by the Département on Savoie Route: Savoie Snow shows it as published, with its date, and does not work it out itself. If in doubt, the official source prevails.
The forecast at the top of the page is calculated by the Open-Meteo model for the pass itself, at its altitude of 2,645 m: temperature, wind and the rain-snow line there differ markedly from the neighbouring valleys. These are model estimates, not measurements taken at the pass, and forecast snowfall does not tell you whether the road is passable.
What does the Col du Galibier webcam show?
This page brings together 2 views: Panorama du col du Galibier and Col du Galibier - Col du Lautaret - Pics de Combeynot - Serre Chevalier - Monetier. The views come from UGA and Windy.com Webcams. They show the sky, visible snow and visibility at a given moment; they do not tell you whether the road is open.
Savoie and Hautes-Alpes: two sources
The Galibier is in Savoie, but the road continues to the Col du Lautaret, in the Hautes-Alpes. For a journey over the pass, check the status in both départements: a restriction on one side can be enough to block a route.
Like the other major Savoie passes, the Galibier is closed in winter. The Département publishes a snow-clearing schedule in spring and traffic notices during the season; the announced dates remain subject to the weather.
